Grabs and struggling: how to make a grab stick, and how to break free
Two patches in one week changed who wins a grab. The short version: the civilian’s Stalk tier decides it now. Grab someone at tier 0 or 1 and they will usually be gone before the execution starts; at tier 2 it is a race.
The rules in four lines
- Stalk to tier 3 before you grab. Below that, most civilians slip out.
- Bloodthirst 3 on top of tier 3 gives you the best chance of holding on.
- Grab beside an environmental execution and the kill beats the struggle.
- Civilians: keep your Stalk tier down and carry something that breaks a grab.

Who wins a grab
Read it from the civilian’s Stalk tier down the side and Michael’s Bloodthirst across the top. “A race” means both of you are mashing the prompt and whoever finishes first wins; Capability tips it toward the civilian.
It isn’t exact. Some civilians still get out at tier 3, some can never escape even at tier 1, and on PC a few players blame macros that finish the minigame instantly. Treat the grid as the odds, not a guarantee.
Playing Michael: making a grab stick
Stalk first, grab second
Tier 3 on your target is the whole game now. How Stalk builds and why a target sometimes seems to jump straight to tier 3 is in the Stalk and executions guide; the short answer is that civilians can’t see their tier until they notice you.
Build Bloodthirst before the fights you care about
Executions raise it, and executing a target you have stalked to tier 3 raises it most. At Bloodthirst 3 a tier-3 civilian rarely gets out. A tier-2 civilian against Bloodthirst 3, or a tier-3 civilian against Bloodthirst 2, comes down to who is faster on the prompt.
Grab where the kill is
An environmental execution starts almost at once, so a grab right beside one ends before a low-tier civilian finishes struggling. You have to be close: a few steps away and they get out. Where the environmental executions are is part of learning each map.
A failed grab costs less than it used to
Patch 1.0.3 cut how far a missed grab throws the civilian, so they stumble less and run sooner. Don’t count on a whiff buying you a second try.
Hiding-spot executions are unreliable
Since 1.0.3 the civilian often climbs out of the closet or car as you press execute. Pressing execute the moment you enter works for some players. Worth knowing before you draw the hiding-spot prestige challenge.
Playing a civilian: breaking free
Keep your Stalk tier low
Stay away from Michael long enough and your Stalk marker drops off. Thomas Armitage’s Running Back trait lowers your tier every time you hit Michael, which makes him the hardest civilian to hold.
Capability helps
Higher Capability makes the struggle easier. Since 1.0.3 the top values give a little less, but Bob, Thomas and the other high-Capability civilians still get out more often. Compare them on the stats page.
Carry a way out
The Ice Pick and Pocket Knife break a grab; the knife’s minigame got slightly harder in 1.0.3. The Ancient Amulet cancels the first grab or hit outright, though Michael can see its glow.
Stay near a teammate
A civilian, or a resident you handed a weapon to, can knock you out of Michael’s grasp. Several civilians have Progressive Challenges for exactly that.
With a high-Capability civilian, some players now leave the Pocket Knife at home and bring a med kit or a flare instead, because low-tier grabs are escapable without it. With a low-Capability civilian, keep it.
Grab bugs: what is fixed and what isn’t
| Problem | Status |
|---|---|
| Grabs far too hard to escape at Bloodthirst 3 | Fixed in 1.0.4 |
| Fall damage after struggling free on a slope | Fixed in 1.0.4 |
| Executed after appearing to break free | Fixed in 1.0.3 |
| Can’t move after breaking free, or after trying to get in a car or on a bike while grabbed | Fixed in 1.0.3 |
| Stuck at walking speed after being grabbed | Still happening for some players |
| Civilian climbs out of a hiding spot during the execution | Still happening for some players |
The full list of changes is in the patch notes.
Challenges that need you to break free
Progressive Challenges that count struggle wins or defensive-item escapes, smallest goal first. Since grabs are easier to escape at low Stalk tiers, these go faster than they did at launch.

Questions
- Why does everyone break out of my grabs?
- Because of their Stalk tier. Since Patches 1.0.3 and 1.0.4, civilians at Stalk tier 0 to 2 escape grabs easily, even when you are at Bloodthirst 3. Stalk your target to tier 3 before you grab, get your Bloodthirst up, or grab them right next to an environmental execution so the kill starts before they can finish the struggle.
- How do you escape Michael's grab?
- Win the struggle minigame. It is easy at Stalk tier 0 and 1, a race at tier 2 and at tier 3 against a Michael below Bloodthirst 3, and very hard at tier 3 against Bloodthirst 3. A Pocket Knife or Ice Pick breaks you free, the Ancient Amulet cancels the first grab outright, and a teammate can knock you out of his hands.
- Does Capability help you escape grabs?
- Yes. Capability makes the struggle easier. Patch 1.0.3 toned down how much it helps at the highest values, so Bob's nine is no longer as far ahead of a mid-Capability civilian as it was.
- Why did my Stalk jump straight to tier 3?
- It didn't jump. You don't see your Stalk tier until you first notice Michael, so he can stalk you to tier 3 before the marker ever appears on your screen.
- Why can't I execute someone in a hiding spot?
- It has been unreliable since Patch 1.0.3: the civilian often climbs out as you press execute. Some players still land it by pressing execute the instant they enter the closet or car. It matters most for the hiding-spot execution challenges.
- What did Patch 1.0.4 change about grabs?
- It fixed a 1.0.3 bug that made grabs far too hard to escape at Bloodthirst 3, and fall damage after struggling free on uneven ground. The 1.0.3 change underneath it stayed: easier escapes at Stalk tier 0 to 2.
