Is Halloween: The Game banned in Australia?

It cannot be bought on Steam in Australia. That much is directly checkable, and the check is worth showing because the claim circulating alongside it — that New Zealand is also affected — is not true.

Steam’s store API returns a listing for a game when you ask for it with a country code. Asking for this game with cc=AU returns no listing at all. Asking for The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, a comparable asymmetrical horror title, with the same cc=AU returns a normal listing at A$21.95. The Australian endpoint is working; it is this title that is missing from it. Asking for this game with cc=NZ returns a normal listing at NZ$60.99, and US, UK, German and Japanese storefronts all return listings too.

The likely reason is in the game’s own content descriptor, which the developers submitted to Steam and which states verbatim that players “can consume beer and smoke marijuana from their inventory”. Australia’s classification rules treat depictions of drug use tied to incentives or rewards far more strictly than most territories, and interactive drug use is a long-standing sticking point there — it is the category that has caught other games before this one. The graphic violence the same descriptor describes is not unusual for the classification board; the marijuana is the part that stands out.

What this page will not tell you is how to get around it. Region-shifting a Steam account breaches the subscriber agreement and risks the account rather than the game, and that is a worse trade than waiting to see whether a classified version appears.
