What are you actually supposed to do as a civilian?
The single most common complaint in launch-week reviews is that the game never explains the civilian side. This is what can be pieced together, and where the gaps genuinely are.
Why you are confused, and why it is not you
Across a sample of 198 launch-window Steam reviews, twenty-two mention not understanding the objective and seventeen mention the absence of a tutorial. That is not a fringe complaint — it is roughly one review in five raising the same thing, and it is the clearest signal the game ships without teaching its own civilian loop.
So the first useful thing to know is that the confusion is a property of the game rather than a gap in your attention. The second is that a guide claiming to lay out the full objective flow four days after launch is mostly reconstructing it from a handful of matches, and should be read that way — including this one, which is why it says what it is drawing on.
What the official material actually commits to
The developers describe the multiplayer mode as up to five players working to free the town from Michael, with an array of interactable elements, and framed around teaming up to aid your friends and the residents of Haddonfield. That is the extent of the official description of the civilian objective.
Reviews from Advance Access add one concrete detail the official posts do not: Michael's win condition involves killing VIP citizens rather than the player characters, which reframes the civilian job as protecting NPCs rather than simply surviving. That comes from players rather than from the developers, so treat it as reported rather than documented.
The practical starting point
Play a civilian whose stat spread does not punish a mistake while you are still learning what the stats do. Laurie Strode is the only civilian on the roster with no stat below six, which makes her the least likely to have a hard failure state you have not learned to avoid yet.
Split roles rather than crowding the same job. A squad's best value in a stat is what matters in a 1v4, not its average — four people who are all good at the same thing have covered one job four times and left three uncovered. The Loadout Lab shows exactly which of the four columns your squad is leaving at its floor.
Do not build a plan around a rare item. The Ancient Amulet is the only one with a settled effect, and it is rare enough that finding one is a windfall rather than a strategy.
Common questions
- Is there a tutorial?
- Nothing in the official material describes one, and the absence of teaching is a recurring theme in launch reviews. The story mode's prologue functions as an introduction to Michael's verbs, but there is no equivalent for the civilian side.
- What is Michael actually trying to do?
- Advance Access players report that Michael wins by killing VIP citizens rather than by eliminating the four players. That is reported by players rather than stated in an official post, so it is worth confirming in your own matches.
- Which civilian should a new player pick?
- Laurie Strode. She is the only civilian with no stat below six, so no single situation punishes her the way three Athleticism punishes Eric Dunn or two Personality punishes Rachel Callahan.
