Road Flare

What it does
Lit, it blinds Michael while he is looking at it, the way a flashlight does, whether you hold it or throw it down.
The road flare works like a flashlight that does not need aiming. Once lit, it blinds Michael when he looks at it, so you can hold it to keep him off you while he faces you, or throw it down to make a small area he cannot comfortably stand in.
Light it before you throw it. An unlit flare thrown at Michael does nothing.
It pairs well with the other rare pickups: a lantern tells you where Michael is coming from, and a hourglass may extend his downed window, although extra time is unreliable.
How do you use the Road Flare?
Light it first. Then either hold it while Michael is coming at you, so that he has to look into it, or drop it between you and him to make a patch of ground he does not want to cross.
A thrown flare is most useful where Michael has to come through a single space, like a doorway or a gap in a fence, while you are working on something behind it.

Ancient Amulet
Negates Michael's first grab and blinds him for roughly three seconds. No button press needed.
Fragile Hourglass
Throw it beside a downed Michael for a possible longer arrest window. Extra time is unreliable; it does not guarantee an arrest.
Brass Lantern
Switched on, it shows Michael through a green glow, even while he is invisible in Shape Jump.
