Chapter 4, Challenge 6: complete the chapter matching the film's plot

The other thirty-five challenges ask you to do something. This one asks you to perform something — the Wallace house sequence from the 1978 film, in order, with nothing out of place. Miss one beat and the chapter has to be restarted from the beginning, which is why Chapter 4 is where completionist runs stall.

Twenty beats in four acts: Annie has seven, Bob and Lynda four, the Sheet three, Laurie six.Annie7 beatsBob & Lynda4 beatsThe Sheet3 beatsLaurie6 beats
Annie: the dog, the laundry door, the car · Bob & Lynda: the closet, the kitchen wall, the glasses · The Sheet: the costume, the phone cord, the staging · Laurie: the discovery, the chase, the balcony. A failed beat in the Laurie act costs the whole chapter, not just the act.

The twenty beats, in order

Compiled from six walkthroughs that each ran the full sequence. Beats marked tier gate fail silently; beats marked disputed are ones the sources do not agree on.

  1. 01AnnieGo straight to the Wallace house

No detours. Arriving triggers the opening cutscene.

  2. 02Deal with the dog, then hide the body

The prompt is a hug. Do it while Annie is in the laundry room, and hide what is left — she reacts if she finds it.

  3. 03Lock the laundry room door

This is the step people skip. Locked in, Annie has to climb out of the side window, which is what puts her outside and alone.

  4. 04Let her go back in and answer the phone

She takes the call from Laurie. A cutscene closes the beat.

  5. 05Stalk her while she hunts for the car keysdisputed

She tries the car, finds it locked, and goes back inside to look. That whole loop is free stalk time.

  6. 06Hide in the car and take your hands off the controller

When she gets in, the strangle plays automatically. Grabbing her first is how this beat gets failed.

  7. 07Kill the lights and put her body upstairsdisputed

Which of the two comes first is the one thing the walkthroughs cannot agree on — see below.

  8. 08Bob & LyndaStalk both of them from the downstairs closet

Get into the closet in front of the living room before they settle in. Zooming in fills the meter faster.

  9. 09Wait out the phone call and let them go upstairs

Lynda takes the call, then the pair head up. Rushing this loses the next beat.

  10. 10Pin Bob to the kitchen wall when he comes down for a drinktier gate

Tier 3 stalk or the pin does not exist. Six sources say so, and one adds that there is no other way to pin him in the kitchen.

  11. 11Take Bob's glasses off the body

Five sources treat this as part of the script rather than a flourish.

  12. 12The SheetTake the Sheet from the upstairs room on the right

Michael puts it on automatically. Wearing it is what lets Lynda see you without panicking.

  13. 13Let Lynda finish her bedroom dialogue, then kill her with the telephonetier gate

Stalk her to tier 3 while she talks. The kill is the phone cord, after she picks it up to call Laurie.

  14. 14Carry Bob upstairs and stage the bodies

The staging cutscene is the confirmation that the middle act is done.

  15. 15LaurieGo back to the same downstairs closet and stalk Laurietier gate

She arrives, and the closet is again the safe place to build the meter.

  16. 16Let her see the bodies before you grab her

She has to walk into the staged bedroom first. Grab her after, and she breaks free — that is scripted, not a failure.

  17. 17Chase her across the street into the other house

Follow her over. Four sources treat the chase as the fastest part of the chapter.

  18. 18Rip her out of the downstairs closet and cut her

A hit, not a kill. Two sources say the single stab as you pull her out is what the film beat wants.

  19. 19Rip her out of the upstairs closet and grab her

She wounds Michael here. Being hurt is part of the script.

  20. 20Let her go, and let Loomis shoot you

The chapter ends the way the film does. Nothing after this is under your control.

What the guides argue about

Lights first, or body first?

Three runs switch off every light in the house — porches included — and then carry Annie upstairs. Two stage her first, take the cutscene, and flip the lights on the way down to the closet. Both orders produce the completion. Three of the five creators say in as many words that they do not know whether the lights do anything at all.

What Laurie stabs you with

A knitting needle to the eye, a clothes hanger, a pocket knife: four sources, three answers, and two more who do not name it. It changes nothing about what you do — you let her wound you either way — but it is a good reminder of how much of the community’s written detail on this chapter is recall rather than reading.

Where correct runs die

The most-upvoted complaint thread about this challenge is not about difficulty. It is a list of NPCs leaving their marks, and every walkthrough hits at least one of them.

  • The dog is not there. Its spawn is random. Runs get restarted over it before anything else has happened, which is the cheapest failure on this list.
  • Lynda comes downstairs. She is supposed to wait in the bedroom. When she wanders, the kitchen beat happens in front of a witness. One player’s workaround is to pin Bob at the moment he turns to leave rather than waiting.
  • Laurie runs the wrong way. The chase is scripted across the street; when she breaks that script the sequence cannot be recovered.
  • The dog’s handler arrives from the wrong side. Players describe him coming round the side of the house where killing him unseen is impossible. Walking around to his spawn side before starting is the community’s answer.
  • The chapter simply does not record it. A player who did every beat correctly — dog, car, kitchen, sheet, phone cord, discovery, chase, wound — still describes not getting the completion. That is the same tracking problem the challenge hub documents, and no run-side change fixes it.

It may be looser than the guides make it look

One creator completed this challenge on a run he openly calls messy, and his Lynda bedroom scene never played at all. That single counterexample does not tell you which beats are optional — but it does mean a run that went slightly wrong is worth finishing rather than restarting on the spot, because the check at the end is the only opinion that counts.

Sixteen minutes covering every beat above in one take, including the dead time while Annie looks for her keys — which is where most written guides skip ahead and leave you wondering whether you have missed something.

Questions people arrive with

What is the order for Chapter 4 Challenge 6?

Dog, locked laundry door, the phone call, the car strangle, the lights and Annie staged upstairs, stalk Bob and Lynda from the closet, pin Bob to the kitchen wall, his glasses, the Sheet, Lynda by telephone, stage the bodies, then the Laurie sequence: the discovery, the grab, the chase, the two closets, and Loomis.

Why does Chapter 4 Challenge 6 not count when I did everything?

Three causes recur. Bob or Lynda were not at tier 3 when you reached the execution, so a beat silently did not happen the scripted way; a glitch moved someone out of position; or the chapter did not save its challenge state at all. Missing a beat cannot be repaired mid-run — the chapter has to be restarted.

Do you have to turn off all the lights?

Nobody knows. Three walkthroughs kill every light including the porches and hedge about whether it matters; two never mention it and still complete the challenge. It costs a minute, which is why most guides do it.

What do you get for it?

The Sheet — the ghost costume Michael wears in the film — is what the players in the subreddit say they are grinding this challenge for.

Does the dog always spawn?

No. Several runs restart the chapter because the dog is not there, and the walkthroughs treat it as random rather than something you can force.
